Coleen McLoughlin has learnt a lot on her meteoric rise to fame and fortune with her fiancé Wayne Rooney. But it seems no one mentioned the function of Customs officers.

Ms McLoughlin, 18, insists she was "entirely unaware" of the need to pay duty on the treasure trove of designer goods she amassed in five days at New York's Bloomingdale's, Saks on Fifth Avenue and Macy's, after she was stopped in the nothing to declare channel at Manchester airport.

Rooney had treated the aspiring actress to a £10,000 pre-Christmas shopping trip with two girlfriends. But when they returned, Customs officers who detained her for two hours said she was surprised to learn the total purchase limit was £145.

They said 14 people had been stopped on that flight. "An appropriate financial penalty was applied," a spokesman said. "No arrests were made."

A spokesman for Ms McLoughlin said: "She was entirely unaware that she was in breach of any regulations and co-operated fully with Customs officers in paying duty. The matter is now closed."
