Police attacked during disturbances

Police have been attacked by crowds of around 100 people after fresh disturbances erupted in Northern Ireland.

Petrol bombs, bricks, fireworks and other missiles were thrown at officers during the trouble in Portadown, Co Armagh, last night.

Police fired baton rounds at rioters after they gathered at Corcrain Road close to a sectarian flashpoint.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area.

Sinn Fein Assembly member John O'Dowd claimed Catholic families in the area were packing their bags as loyalists attacked again.

"Unionist political leaders need to act," he said.
