Police continue MI5 'torture' investigation

The Metropolitan Police will continue its investigation into the secret services over torture claims made by former Guantanamo inmate Binyam Mohamed, the head of the Crown Prosecution Service confirmed yesterday.

Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, said the police inquiries were focused on a series of allegations made by Mr Mohamed during interviews with detectives. But Mr Starmer also confirmed that the CPS had decided not to prosecute an MI5 officer over his interrogation of Mr Mohamed during his detention in Pakistan in 2002.

Mr Mohamed claimed the agent, known only as "Witness B", was aware of his ill-treatment while he was being held in Pakistan in 2002.

In a statement, Mr Starmer said: "We are unable to release further information at this stage because the wider investigation into other potential criminal conduct arising from allegations made by Mr Mohamed in interviews with the police is ongoing."
