A prisoner was on the run today after escaping from court, the Ministry of Justice said.

James Stevenson, 29, was sentenced to five years at Swansea Crown Court for firearms offences. But he fled and was being hunted by police.

A Ministry of Justice spokesman said: "We can confirm that a prisoner from HMP Cardiff escaped lawful custody after appearing at Swansea Crown Court on 2 October.

"All agencies concerned are co-operating fully with the police to bring this incident to a conclusion. This is a matter for South Wales Police."
