A hotel chef out celebrating his 30th birthday was murdered by masked muggers for just £12. Krzysztos Rusek was robbed and stabbed to death while his girlfriend and friends looked on helplessly, detectives say.

He had just finished work at an Ibis hotel and was sitting in a nearby garden area with friends in Fulham, west London, when the group was set upon. A Scotland Yard spokesman said: "As the group of four sat in the garden, four to five men entered the park area and tried to rob them.

"Krzysztos was then fatally stabbed and one of his friends was stabbed in the leg.

"At this stage it would appear that the motive is robbery and £12 was taken from the victims. No other property was stolen."

Officers said there were no clear descriptions of the suspects. "Two of the men had the lower part of their faces covered but it is not known what with," the spokesman added. No weapon has been recovered.

Mr Rusek was from Poland but moved to London eight years ago.
