An eight-year-old girl has died after being knocked down by a car in Salford.

A 24-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently being held in custody, said Greater Manchester Police (GMP).

Emergency services were called to Monton Road at around 10.40am on Saturday following reports of a collision between a blue Vauxhall Corsa and a pedestrian.

Paramedics pronounced the child dead at the scene.

Monton Road remains closed between Cavendish Road and Half Edge Lane, the force said.

Police Sergeant Lee Westhead, of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “Tragically a young child lost her life this morning and we are doing all we can to support her family at this devastating time.”

He added: “The road closures will remain in place throughout the afternoon as investigative work is carried out so please avoid the area where possible.”

Anyone with any information about the incident, including dashcam footage, is urged to call GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741
