Greater Manchester Police have launched a murder investigation after a body was found wrapped in plastic and dumped among trees in Salford.

Detectives said the remains were discovered at 8.10am on Tuesday in a wooded area close to Eccles Old Road.

The victim has not been identified and no details about age or gender have been released.

Police have cordoned off the area as forensics specialists examine the scene, close to a school and care home.

Detective Chief Inspector Colin Larkin, of the force’s major incident team, said: “Clearly, we’re looking at suspicious circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body and are doing everything we can at the scene to gather as much evidence as possible."

Police appealed for any potential witnesses to come forward.

Mr Larkin said: “I appreciate that this news is extremely alarming for people in the local area but should anyone have any information, whether that is about what happened or whether they noticed something suspicious, they need to get in touch with us as a matter of urgency.

“We have a highly skilled team of detectives working on this case and will provide updates as and when we are able to do so.”

Anyone with information was asked to call police on 0161 856 6777 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
