A teenage boy found unconscious in a swimming pool at a police training school died in hospital yesterday.

William Kadama, 14, from Barnet, north London, was found in the pool at Hendon Police Training School with another 14-year-old boy, Gameli Akuklu, who died at Northwick Park hospital on the day of the tragedy. A postmortem examination on Gameli confirmed that he died from drowning.

William, who did not regain consciousness, had been on life support for a week at Great Ormond Street hospital, London. The machine was switched off yesterday, according to the Metropolitan Police. A postmortem examination is set to be carried out and an inquest will be held.

The incident occurred last Tuesday when the teenagers were taking part in a council-run scheme to keep youngsters occupied during the holidays. Both boys were discovered underwater and were unconscious when a lifeguard pulled them out.

An investigation in to the tragedy is under way and will be supervised by the independent Police Complaints Authority. The Health and Safety Executive will conduct its own investigation.
