A man and a woman have been charged with the murder of two boys aged 13 and 14 in Sheffield and will appear in court on Monday.

The 37-year-old man and 34-year-old woman were arrested following a “serious incident” which left four other children in hospital.

South Yorkshire Police said the woman has also been charged with three counts of attempted murder.

Officers were called to a semi-detached house in Gregg House Road in the Shiregreen area of the city at around 7.30am on Friday.

Detectives have not detailed the nature of the incident, but confirmed it was not a shooting.

On Sunday the force said in a statement: “A man and woman arrested on Friday 24 May at an address in Shiregreen have now each been charged with [two counts of] murder.

“The woman has also been charged with [three counts of] attempted murder. Both will appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.

“The two cannot be named for legal reasons.”

The boys, aged 13 and 14, died after they were taken to hospital on Friday morning.

Four other children, aged 11, 10, three and seven months, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were reportedly “rescued” from the house and taken to hospital, but were discharged on Saturday afternoon.

A spokesperson said detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

People living nearby saw more than a dozen police cars and four ambulances arrive on the tree-lined road, and an air ambulance landed in the grounds of the nearby Hartley Brook Primary Academy school.
