A man was shot through the front door of his home in Coleraine, Derry, on Tuesday evening.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has said it is now investigating the incident after the victim, who is in his 30s, heard a knock at the front door before two shots were then fired.

Officers were called to a property in the Churchlands Road area late on Tuesday, following reports of gunfire.

The shooting took place at around 10.30pm, according to police, and the injured man has been taken to hospital to be treated by doctors.

Detective Sergeant Wallace, the investigating officer, revealed in a statement that, upon hearing the knock, “the man did not open the door and it was then that two shots were fired through the door and struck the man”.

“He has been taken to hospital for his injuries,” DS Wallace said.

Police also confirmed that two men were seen leaving the area and heading towards the Winston Way area following the incident.

“Enquiries are continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding this incident,” DS Wallace said, before adding: “This was a brutal attack for which there is no justification. There is no place for attacks such as this in our society.”

PSNI has appealed to the public for more information.

In a tweet shared on the service’s official account, as well as in the statement given by DS Wallace, police said that anyone with information is urged to call 101 quoting reference number 1947.
