Suicide suspect's knives tested for link to Witchalls stabbing

DNA tests are being carried out on several knives found in the car belonging to a suspect in the Abigail Witchalls stabbing, who has killed himself.

The weapons were found in a bag recovered from Richard Cazaly's blue Volvo 440 after his death from a pills overdose in Scotland.

Mr Cazaly, 23, disappeared to the Scottish Highlands after splitting from his Australian girlfriend, Vanessa McKenzie. Two apparent suicide notes were also found in the vehicle but they made no mention of Mrs Witchalls or the attack.

Mr Cazaly and his girlfriend had lived in the village of Little Bookham, Surrey, close to where Mrs Witchalls was stabbed in the neck and left for dead in front of her son.

Ms McKenzie, 25, flew to Australia on 25 April. Hours afterwards, her boyfriend, who was said to have been heartbroken by the break-up, drove to Scotland and took an overdose.

Two officers from Surrey Police spent yesterday questioning the girlfriend in Australia and will continue today.

Mr Cazaly had done itinerant gardening and work as a chef and also used to juggle knives, which could explain the presence of the blades. They were not obviously bloodstained.
