A murder investigation has been launched following the death of a 77-year-old man who was attacked at his home on Christmas Eve.

Harry Conlon’s son Paul had already been charged with his attempted murder after police found him at the scene following reports of a disturbance in Deansfield Close, Sunderland.

The 43-year-old is due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on Monday.

But police say the inquiry will now be made a murder probe, after Mr Conlon Snr, who sustained head injuries during the incident, had died in hospital on Monday.

Detective Chief Inspector Jane Fairlamb, of Northumbria Police, said: “This is a tragic case which has sadly resulted in Harry’s death, and our thoughts go out to his family at this terrible time.

“Specialist family liaison officers will continue to offer them any support they need as they try to come to terms with their devastating loss.

“They have asked that their privacy is respected at this time and I would also ask the public to avoid any speculation,”

Neighbors meanwhile have been paying tribute to Mr Conlon Snr online.

One, Andrea Lynn, said: “What a terrible thing to happen – Harry was an absolutely lovely man who was always a gentleman and smiling – thoughts and prayers with his wife and sister.

Another, Warren Burton, added: “Very, very sad news, was a lovely man as well always laughing.”

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Northumbria Police.
