Jonty Bravery: Teenager accused of throwing six-year-old boy off Tate Modern balcony named

Teenager was granted automatic anonymity in court proceedings until his 18th birthday

The teenager accused of throwing a six-year-old boy off a viewing platform at the Tate Modern has been publicly named for the first time.

Jonty Bravery was 17 at the time of the alleged incident, but a reporting restriction giving him automatic anonymity because of his age expired on his 18th birthday.

Judge Nicholas Hilliard QC, the Recorder of London, ruled that he could be identified on Tuesday after an application for a new reporting restriction was turned down.

Mr Bravery was charged with attempted murder after allegedly throwing a boy from the 10th floor of the art gallery on 4 August.

The six-year-old boy is French and had been visiting the attraction with his family.

A previous court hearing heard that he suffered a bleed on the brain and fractures to his spine, arms and legs.

His family said in a statement this week that “our little boy doesn’t know any more how to speak, to eat or to move his body”, but that he is beginning to do his best to move his tongue, his right arm and hand.

An update on a GoFundMe page, which has now raised nearly £100,000 for the boy’s medical care, said: “We see his efforts. We believe with all our heart that he will find the way, from his head, to do everything again.

“He is very brave. He keeps on smiling and reacting to our jokes. We begin to see also, unfortunately, his suffering.”

Mr Bravery is due to appear at the Old Bailey for a plea hearing next month.
