Pro-Tommy Robinson protester screams while being handcuffed by police

A Tommy Robinson supporter was filmed wailing uncontrollably as he was handcuffed by police, moments after holding up a banner reading “f**k Islam”.

“Why? Why?” the man is heard screaming as officers hold him by the arms near the protest in central London on Saturday.

The footage was recorded by another Robinson supporter who was live-streaming a demonstration against the English Defence League founder’s jail term for contempt of court.

Early in the clip, the man is seen at the Whitehall protest holding a banner reading: “Free speech, free Tommy, f**k Islam”.

Later he is seen running away from officers after an apparent incident off-camera.

He is caught and handcuffed and can be heard crying out as the man with the camera catches up.

“My arm! My arm is hurting. Why am I being abused? I did nothing wrong,” he asks.

“Phil! Help me mate,” he shouts to the cameraman.

“I wish I could but I’m filming it,” Phil replies.

The handcuffed man continues to cry out even as the police officer handcuffing him lets go and shrugs.

The man, whose identity is not known, is not thought to have been arrested.

It is not clear why he was pursued and handcuffed, but one of the officers can he heard speaking to him about the Islamophobic banner and asking him for his details.

“That was not my flag, I didn’t turn up with that,” he replies. “Someone stood in front of me and I put my hand on it.”

The Metropolitan Police said it could not confirm any details about the incident.

Nine people were arrested after Saturday’s protest turned violent, with demonstrators throwing bottles, metal barriers and beer at police.

Five police officers suffered minor injuries.

Scotland Yard said eight of those arrested had been released under investigation after they were held on suspicion of public order offences, possession of cannabis, breach of the peace, and possession of a flare.

A 26-year-old man has been charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

Hundreds of far-right activists took part in the protest, the latest since Robinson was jailed for 13 months for using social media to broadcast details of a trial which is subject to reporting restrictions.

Leeds Crown Court heard how Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, filmed people involved in the case in a Facebook Live video that was watched around 250,000 times within hours of being posted online.

On Saturday, crowds of supporters chanted “Free Tommy Robinson” as they hurled missiles and smoke bombs at police on the roads around Trafalgar Square. Some were filmed doing Nazi salutes.
