Uber driver cleared of injuring stop and search police officers

An Uber driver has been cleared of injuring two police officers during a stop and search.

Harry Mackenney, 33, told officers he was busy working when he was was pulled over in Penge, south-east London, on Saturday, February 22, last year, the Old Bailey heard.

As he drove away, one male officer was knocked over and a female officer fell from the moving vehicle and briefly fell unconscious in the street.

The officers were taken to hospital where they were treated for cuts and bruises.

Mr Mackenney was arrested after going to Lewisham Police Station early the next morning.

During the trial, prosecutor Philip Stott told how officers had received information earlier that day about suspected drug dealing in the area.

They were told about two vehicles thought to be involved, one of which was a black VW Passat registered to the defendant.

In addition, they were wrongly informed Mr Mackenney had previous convictions for drugs when in fact he was a man of good character.

Mr Mackenney had denied two charges of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm, two charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and one offence of dangerous driving.

On Monday, a jury at the Old Bailey acquitted Mackenney, of Parnham Close, Bromley, south-east London.
