A woman has been rushed to hospital after a knife attack outside a primary school in Merseyside.

Police officers were called to Devonshire Park Primary School in Birkenhead after reports the woman had been assaulted as she walked back to her car.

The school has been evacuated and police have launched a manhunt for the attacker.

The woman has been taken to hospital with injuries to her hand, which are not believed to be life threatening.

Police said they thought the attacker was known to the victim and the assault may be domestic related.

A police helicopter circled directly over the school as officers conducted house-to-house enquiries and checked CCTV.

A 61-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Merseyside Police on 0151 777 2876 or the Crimestoppers line anonymously on 0800 555 111
