MINISTERS said yesterday they were cutting down on teachers' paperwork and asked unions to call off their boycott of tests.

Baroness Blatch, Minister of State for Education, said the boycott of national curriculum assessments and testing was 'deeply depressing'. A government consultation document proposes that teachers will only have to fill out assessments for 13 instead of 22 topics for 7-year-olds, and 6 out of 41 for 14-year-olds.

The National Union of Teachers said it would reconsider its boycott at the outcome of the curriculum review in December.
