Danielle McCallum: Family of Scottish teenager who died in Ibiza deny claims her death was caused by ecstasy

The family of a Scottish teenager who died while on holiday in Ibiza have attacked claims her death was linked to ecstasy.

Danielle McCallum from Greenock, Renfrewshire died in intensive care at the Spanish island’s Can Misses Hospital on Tuesday morning.

Medics reportedly said it was suspected the 18-year-old had taken MDMA.

However, her family have labelled the reports as “rubbish” saying she suffered a fall on Thursday and had been recovering in her hotel room since then.

Miss McCallum’s grandfather Andy McDonald told the Scottish Sun: “The whole of Scotland think she's died taking ecstasy tablets but it's not as simple as that.”

”She had been taking painkillers all weekend. She was home alone most of the time.”

“I feel like she's been shown in a bad light and there's no truth to it. She was a lovely, gorgeous girl.“

He told the Daily Record that the cause of her death is currently unknown.

”We won't know for months what caused her death,” he said. “It'll be four to six months before they get all the reports back.“

Mr McDonald added: “What has been said about drugs is a load of rubbish” and the family is “devastated”.

Miss McCallum was rushed to hospital from a health clinic in San Antonio two hours before her death.

She arrived in a critical condition and suffered heart failure shortly before being admitted.

A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out by Spanish authorities.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: ”We are in contact with local authorities in Ibiza following the death of a British national on September 22.”

“We have met with the family and will continue to provide support at this difficult time.”

Tributes have flooded in for the teenager on Facebook.

Chloe Harper said: "Rest in peace beautiful! I am so thankful to have been friends with such an amazing girl like you! I am heartbroken. Its true what they say god only takes the best for sure! Sleep tight Danielle."

A friend said: “Devastated doesn’t even explain how I’m feeling right now… just so empty inside.”
