COPENHAGEN (AFP) - More Danes would like their country to be a member of a Nordic union than to be part of a united Europe, according to an opinion poll in the daily Information newspaper. The poll found that 39.2 per cent of those questioned preferred membership of a union of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden, while 35.2 per cent preferred being members of a united Europe under the Maastricht treaty.

The poll also found that 50.8 per cent would vote in favour of ratification of the Maastricht treaty on 18 May and 33 per cent would vote against.

Lorries blocked Cherbourg (AFP) - About 70 French fishermen turned back eight lorries carrying fish from Britain after finding foreign produce among their cargo. The fishermen, from three Normandy ports, blocked the lorries after searching them on board a ferry from Poole.
