Drug case woman was 'desperate'

An English woman accused of trafficking heroin told a court in Bangkok, Thailand, that she was desperate for money to enable her to receive treatment for a tropical illness.

Sandra Gregory, 29, from Halifax, said she was suffering from dengue fever when she met a fellow Briton, Robert Lock, 30, from Cambridge, who is also accused of drug trafficking. If convicted, Ms Gregory faces a mandatory death penalty, but no foreigner has been executed for decades. The trial was adjourned until 16 May.
