A five-year-old girl has died after her head became trapped in a lift in Dorset.

Emergency services were called to the scene in Emmadale Close, Weymouth, at around midday on Thursday to help child, who is not being named, after she was trapped in the lift.

Despite the efforts of paramedics and emergency personnel the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for Dorset police said an investigation has been launched into the girl’s death and confirmed that the family had been notified.

"Emmadale Close has been closed to allow emergency services to deal with the incident and for scenes of crime investigators to carry out an examination.

"An investigation, led by Bournemouth CID, has been launched to establish the circumstances surrounding the death," the statement said.

A spokesperson for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service told the Bournemouth Echo: “Once the lift was stabilised, the child was removed using small specialist cutting equipment.”
