SCIENTISTS analysing rock from near Gruinard Bay, north- west Scotland, believe it is 3.3 billion years old, not 2.8 billion as thought before, and was part of Greenland left behind when the Atlantic Ocean was formed. The new date would make the rock, part of a stretch of land 100 miles long by 10 miles wide, the oldest in Europe.
