A grandfather died yesterday, a week after being beaten up and robbed of his car keys in a lift by a gang of youths.

Fred Carter, 64, was punched and kicked near his flat in New Cross, south London, after holding open the lift door for the teenagers. He was taken to hospital and had his spleen removed.
