Grandfather on knife charge

The grandfather of the three- year-old murder victim Rosie Palmer was remanded in custody yesterday after being accused of attempting to kill her stepfather.

Wilf Aves, 66, appeared before magistrates at Hartlepool, Cleveland, charged with the attempted murder of John Thornton. He was arrested after an incident in which Mr Thornton, 46, was allegedly attacked with a kitchen knife early yesterday at a house in Hartlepool. Shaun Armstrong, 32, has been charged with Rosie's murder and has been remanded in custody until 3 August.
