Parishioners in Knowle, Solihull, West Midlands, pledged more than pounds 400,000 in just one day towards an appeal for a new church hall. A further pounds 58,000 was pledged over the following week. The Rev Anthony Dow said: 'God has had a big hand in this because people only give like this if he touches their hearts, not their pockets.'
