10,000 protest over loss of Bombardier train contract
Thousands of people demonstrated in Derby yesterday over the Government's decision not to award a contract to the UK's only remaining train manufacturer, Bombardier.
Shoppers applauded the demonstrators as they marched through the centre of the city, where the firm is based. It warned that the decision to award a £1.4bn contract to build new carriages for the Thameslink route between Bedford and Brighton to the German firm Siemens means that 1,400 jobs will be lost.
