Britons may be heading for the coast in their thousands this weekend but many cannot spell the names of some of our most famous seaside resorts.

In a test, 70 per cent spelt Morecambe as Morecome and a fifth spelt Torquay as Tourkey, Scarborough as Scarbrough and Bournemouth as Bornmouth.

Travelodge undertook the spelling test in response to findings from an audit which found that 25 per cent of the company's daily bookings are for locations which are misspelt.
