Angela Eagle leadership bid: Brick thrown through window of MP's constituency office after she challenges Jeremy Corbyn

Ms Eagle may face a vote of no confidence at Wallasey Labour party meeting on Friday

A brick was thrown through the window of Angela Eagle’s Wallasey constituency office following the announcement that she will challenge Jeremy Corbyn for leadership of the Labour Party.

Reports say Ms Eagle’s office staff have also stopped picking up phones, due to receiving ‘abusive’ calls following the announcement.

The former shadow Business Secretary launched her leadership bid on Monday at an event in London, claiming “Jeremy Corbyn is unable to provide the leadership this huge task needs.”

But the Labour Party branch in Wallasey, where Ms Eagle has been MP for 14 years, released a statement prior to the announcement declaring their support for current leader Jeremy Corbyn.

“Last night at our branch meeting Wallasey branch Labour Party passed, with an overwhelming majority, a motion of support for Jeremy Corbyn as Leader of the Labour Party,” the statement said.

Ms Eagle now faces the prospect of a vote of no confidence from her constituency party.

She is due to be the topic of “lively debate” in a meeting on Friday, with a no-confidence motion on the agenda, according to the constituency party’s vice chair, Paul Davies.

Ms Eagle's official Facebook page has been 'hijacked' by Corbyn supporters since she announced her plans to challenge him as leader, with thousands of comments containing the hashtag #StillCorbyn as well as more creative tags such as #TheEagleHasCrashLanded, and #YouSupportedIraqWar.

People who joined the Labour Party specifically because Mr Corbyn was the leader have been commenting with '#Joined4Corbyn' and #BecauseOfCorbyn'.

Mr Corbyn issued a statement after the attack on Ms Eagle's office urging Labour Party members to treat each other with respect and to cease any violent or threatening behaviour.

“As someone who has also received death threats this week and previously, I am calling on all Labour Party members and supporters to act with calm and treat each other with respect and dignity, even where there is disagreement.

“I utterly condemn any violence or threats, which undermine the democracy within our party and have no place in our politics," he said.
