Police were investigating today after a man with serious burns turned up at a supermarket asking staff for help.

The 43-year-old approached staff at Sainsbury's in Cowes on the Isle of Wight at 2.15am this morning.

A Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police spokeswoman said: "He had suffered burn injuries and said he had been involved in a fire."

The man was taken to St Mary's Hospital on the island and was then transferred to the mainland. His condition was described by police as serious.

Officers have cordoned off the area around the supermarket in Cowes High Street.
