More than 100 firefighters tackle warehouse blaze in east London

About 125 firefighters were called to battle a blaze that has broken out on an industrial estate in Barking, sending plumes of smoke across east London.

The fire broke out on Friday evening at an estate on Alfreds Way, with crews called to the scene at 6.30pm.

Pictures shared on social media suggested smoke from the blaze could be seen from across the capital, with one Twitter user in Battersea sharing an image of the fire.

In a tweet, the London Fire Brigade shared a picture of smoke billowing from a building, saying: “Firefighters are currently tackling a fire at an industrial estate in #Barking. A single storey warehouse is alight.”

The service later added: “Twenty fire engines and around 125 firefighters are currently tackling a fire at an industrial estate on Alfreds Way in #Barking.”

After the fire broke out, some entrances to the A13 road, just north of the industrial estate, were closed – while local residents were warned to keep their doors and windows closed to prevent smoke inhalation, My London reported.

“We’re at the scene of an industrial fire in #Barking. If you live near to this area please keep your windows and doors shut as it is causing a large amount of smoke,” the London Ambulance Service said on social media, confirming its attendance at the blaze. A spokesperson said no one at the scene was currently being treated.

Train services through Barking were also disrupted by the fire, with c2c Rail reporting there were delays on routes as a result of the incident, and replacement bus services laid on for some destinations.

LFB said it had taken 75 calls about the blaze.
