Huge blaze breaks out at Blackpool Central Pier during the night

A massive fire has ripped across Blackpool’s famous Central Pier – just two weeks after the popular tourist attraction was reopened following the coronavirus lockdown.

More than 50 firefighters battled flames through the night after the blaze was reported at the 19th century structure at 3am on Friday morning.

Dramatic video and pictures posted online show an orange glow lighting up the sky and a huge cloud of smoke billowing into the air.

But by morning Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said the fire had been brought under control.

A single Waltzer ride and a workshop building are reported to have suffered the only damage.

Incident Commander Mark Windersaid: “The fire involved a workshop and a ride that are approximately halfway along the central pier. Fortunately early firefighter action has extinguished the fire to the extent there is no visible flame."

An investigation into the cause was being conducted, he added.

The attraction and nearby roads remained closed early Friday morning.

The Central Pier is one of three in the town and was opened in 1868. It is home to a 33m-high big wheel which is not thought to have been damaged in the blaze.
