Body found in search for missing kayaker Grant Broster

A body has been found in the search for a missing kayaker who disappeared two weeks ago after capsizing into a swollen river.

Police believe the body, found near the Waterside Centre, Guildford just after 6pm on Monday, is that of 56-year-old Grant Broster.

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said: “Although formal identification has not yet taken place Mr Broster’s family have been notified.

“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Mr Broster at this difficult time.”

Police have cordoned off a towpath next to the River Wey after emergency services were called to the scene.

Firefighters and paramedics assisted officers in the search before a body was pulled from the water.

His son went into the water to help him and was eventually pulled to safety, but Mr Broster was swept away

Witnesses said the kayak had been “dragged around like a bottle very fast”.

The river, which runs through the centre of Guildford, was in flood at the time following Storm Katie.

The Environment Agency had issued a flood warning for the river after it was swollen by the storm and the Wey Kayak club had posted a warning over social media that the river was “dangerous” at that time.
