Body of steamer passenger recovered from lake

The body of a man who went overboard during a pleasure cruise in the Lake District has been recovered, police said today.

Scores of holidaymakers watched in horror as the man, thought to be Tony Thwaites, 62, of Shelfield, Warwickshire, went over the side of the Lady of the Lake steamer at Sharrow Bay, on Ullswater, last Friday.

A massive underwater and shoreside search was quickly launched but rescuers were unable to trace him.

Cumbria Police said his body was recovered from the lake yesterday.

A spokeswoman said: "Police are now working to formally identify the body.

"The coroner and the family of Mr Thwaites have been informed."
