Bristol pub named after slave trader Edward Colston renamed ‘Ye Olde Pubby Mcdrunkface’

‘We are listening. Black lives matter,’ sign outside venue says

A Bristol pub named after the slave trader Edward Colston has temporarily changed its name to Ye Olde Pubby Mcdrunkface.

The Colston Arms became the latest venue to reconsider its title after a statue of Colston was pulled down by Black Lives Matter protesters.

Footage taken outside the pub on Tuesday showed a banner announcing its provisional name as: “Ye Olde Pubby Mcdrunkface.”

The joke title was a nod to Boaty McBoatface, a name chosen in an online poll in 2016 for a ship which later came to be named the RSS Sir David Attenborough.

The sign describes the name as “clearly temporarily” and says “suggestions welcome”.

A chalkboard outside the pub said: “We are listening. Black lives matter.”

It comes after protesters toppled a statue of Colston in Bristol and threw it into the city’s river.

The statue has since been hoisted from the water and will be displayed in one of the city’s museums.

The demonstrations swept the UK following the death of George Floyd in the US, who died after a white police officer held him down by pressing his knee into his neck for almost nine minutes in Minneapolis on 25 May.
