A woman has died from serious head injuries, possibly sustained after she leaned out of the window of a train, the British Transport Police (BTP) has said.

The victim received a blow to the head on Monday evening near Bristol Temple Meads railway station, while on a train travelling between Bath and Keynsham in Somerset.

BTP officers were called to the scene around 10.10pm but were unable to save the woman, who died at the scene.

Staff from the South Western Ambulance Service and Avon and Somerset Police were also present.

A spokesperson from the BTP said the organisation was working to confirm the woman’s identity and inform her next of kin.

It is thought the victim was travelling to Bristol following a visit to the Christmas market in Bath.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner,” the BTP said in a statement.
