Canary Wharf: Man becomes second death within 24 hours in financial district after 'falling from height' in shopping centre

Latest incident follows fatal fall at the nearby London underground station

A man has died after falling from a height at a shopping centre in London’s Canary Wharf, the second death in the financial district in 24 hours.

Police, paramedics and the air ambulance were called to the Cabot Place shopping centre in Canada Square during the morning rush hour.

The man, who is believed to be aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene and the area was cordoned off.

It follows the death of a 32 year-old man who fell from an escalator at Canary Wharf tube station at 3pm on Monday.

The first incident is not being treated as suspicious by British Transport Police. “Officers were called to Canary Wharf station after reports a person had fallen from height,” the force said in a statement.

“Paramedics also attended and 32-year-old man from London was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Their family have been informed.

“This incident is not currently being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”

The second fatality happened at Cabot Place in Canada Square at around 8.44am on Tuesday.

“Police were called by the London Ambulance Service to reports of a man who had fallen from height,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

“Officers, the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance attended. The man, believed to be aged in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9.05am.

“His next-of-kin have not yet been informed. A cordon is in place. Enquiries continue.”

The Canary Wharf Group, which owns the property, tweeted: “We can confirm there was a fatality this morning. This is subject to an on-going police enquiry. Our thoughts are with the individual’s family at this difficult time. We are unable to comment further at this time.”
