Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a man died in Cardiff city centre last night.

Streets were cordoned off and a police helicopter was still flying over the area after daylight broke.

Police arrived on the scene, a popular nightlife spot in St Mary’s Street, after reports of an assault at about 4.50am.

“Officers and the police helicopter continue to be in the area and a number of cordons remain in place while investigations continue,” South Wales Police said.

The dead man has not yet been formally identified.

The area cordoned off is at the southern end of St Mary’s Street, near Cardiff Central railway station.

Anyone with information is asked to phone 101 and quote reference number 1900265784.
