Shocking CCTV captures moment reckless cyclist mows down young girl before riding off

A little girl was knocked down by a cyclist who failed to stop and check if she was okay.

As she walked along a cobbled road in the West Midlands town of Stourbridge with her family, the child was captured on CCTV with her own bike at her side.

Suddenly, the lycra-clad cyclist leaps off a wall behind her and collides with the child’s bike, knocking it over and sending her falling to the ground.

The rider does not stop to see if the girl is ok, but speeds off into the distance.

A man understood to be the girl’s father starts to chase the cyclist, but stops and turns back to comfort his daughter.

The incident happened outside Grandad’s Attic antique shop and was captured on the shop’s security camera.

Owner David Powell, 57, said: "I was inside my shop and I heard some kind of thing going on and a girl crying. I looked out my door, and presumed she had fallen off her bike but then saw her dad come running back towards her and realised that she had been knocked off the bike by an adult.

"Her dad had chased after him but then come back to see how his daughter was. He was torn between going after the cyclist and seeing how his daughter was. There was a group of people gathered. I gave her a drink and a bowl of water and we mopped her wounds. They were just grazes, but she was very upset.”

He said cyclists often take the raised path on the road.

"There is a bridge and by the side of the bridge there is a little wall, 18 inches high, and mountain bikers think it is clever to hop up onto the wall and hop off the other end," Mr Powell added. "The family were walking along the wall and as they got to the end he was jumping off. He jumped right into the little girl.

"I think part of the problem is that it has got so popular. There are more people cycling on the footpath.”

He said he believes the family reported the incident to the police.
