Shrien Dewani's lawyers may seek to have him released from a secure psychiatric unit. But they say he is too ill to be extradited to South Africa to stand trial for his wife's murder.
Mr Dewani, 32, who denies any involvement in Anni Dewani's death in 2010, is suffering from depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Yesterday, Westminster magistrates' court was told his condition had "materially improved" and that his psychiatrist had assessed that his mental health would improve further if he was released to an open NHS ward.
The case was adjourned until 2 October for a report by a psychiatrist acting on behalf of the South African government.
