A drugs warning has been issued following the death of a teenager who had taken ecstasy.

The 19-year-old woman was found dead at a hotel on Great Ancoats Street in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Authorities urged anyone with information to come forward and urged anyone who may have taken the drug to seek medical attention urgently.

Superintendent Stephen Howard, of Greater Manchester Police's City of Manchester team, said it more than possible other people took the drug.

"This is a tragic situation, the death of a young person is always devastating, but in these circumstances, it is all the more heart-breaking. My thoughts are with her family and friends at this time.

"Sadly, we know it is very unlikely that the girl was the only person to have taken this drug last night,” Mr Howard said.

"We are appealing to anyone who may have taken ecstasy, to get checked out.

"Even if you took it some hours ago, this pill will still be in your system and could be seriously harming your health.

"Anyone with any information about what happened or where this drug may have come from should contact police as soon as possible," he added.

Greater Manchester Police made 4,693 drugs seizures in 2015-2016, taking in 42 kg of heroin, 115 kg of cocaine and 412 kg of herbal cannabis, according to Manchester Evening News.

The city has one of the worst drug and alcohol problems in the country with 106 deaths between 2013 and 2015.
