Elizabeth Hurley has been given compensation by a delivery company after her pet dog was run over by a driver, her sister has said.

The actor’s Labrador, Hector, was said to have suffered a collapsed lung and broken leg in the incident at the 53-year-old’s Herefordshire estate in December.

Katie Hurley said her sister was left “absolutely devastated”, and that the family feared the pet would not pull through.

She told the Mail on Sunday: “The vet came and thankfully saved his life, which is miraculous. We nearly lost him because of this man’s appalling driving.”

She added: “The van was driving too fast. Because it happened on the estate a speed limit can’t be enforced so we ask people to use their common sense, but he didn’t."

The family asked the delivery company to pay the £2,000 vet bills but the firm initially refused. It agreed to cough up “pretty quickly” after legal action was threatened, Katie said.

In a statement on Saturday, Ms Hurley herself said: “[Amazon] have finally settled the bill and it has taken them nine months to do so. That’s all I can say about it."

An Amazon spokesperson said: "This incident does not reflect our high standards for customer obsession and we will ensure that it is resolved to the full satisfaction of the customer."
