Grenfell Tower: Woman thought to have died during fire found alive in hospital

A woman who was believed to have died during the Grenfell Tower disaster has been found alive in hospital.

Fadumo Ahmed lived on the 19th floor was found unconscious in the building by a fire crew and carried to safety.

Friends feared the worst and started a campaign, putting the 32-year-old’s picture up on posters across the area, unaware she was in hospital.

Ms Ahmed has been receiving treatment for smoke inhalation since the fire and has been surrounded by family – who had no idea that appeals were being made looking for her.

She reportedly called her mother during the fire and said she was unable to get out and was having to climb to higher floors to escape the smoke.

“He [the firefighter] is a hero. He saved her life, it’s that simple. Otherwise, she wouldn’t have got out,” Ms Ahmed’s mother, who wished not to be named, told the Evening Standard.

“We are just so happy she is okay. When we saw how bad the fire was and knew she was inside, it was terrible. We didn’t think anyone else could get out of there alive,” she added.

The Met have said that 79 people are dead or missing after the fire tore through the 24-storey building.
