Dozens of flights have been cancelled at Heathrow and Cardiff after the airports were engulfed by thick fog.

A total of 85 flights at Heathrow had had to be axed by 10am and there were delays to a number of other departures and arrivals.

The European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation described the fog at Heathrow as “quite significant”.

Staff there advised passengers to check with their airline on their flight's status. The Met Office had issued a yellow "be aware" warning for reduced visibility of up to 50 metres in parts of Wales earlier today.

With the fog taking time to clear in west London, further flight disruption was expected during the last part of the morning.

At Cardiff, a number of flights were delayed and some were diverted to other airports.
