Grimsby crash: Five dead after family's car collides with lorry on A18

Five people, one of them believed to be a baby, were killed yesterday when the car they were travelling in slammed head-on into a lorry.

The driver and four passengers in the car were reported to be from the same family and were killed in the collision on the A18 near Grimsby. Three were dead by the time emergency services reached them, the other two were declared dead shortly after reaching hospital. The lorry driver sustained minor injuries.

Police have begun an investigation to determine how the crash happened but local reports suggested that either the car veered out of control after hitting a kerb or it was trying to overtake another vehicle as the truck approached.

James Cartwright, of Humberside police, said the five dead had been travelling in a Nissan Primera which hit a truck at about 12.30 in the afternoon.

He said: “Five people, who are all thought to have been known to each other, were travelling in the car at the time of the collision. Two of these were taken to the Diana Princess of Wales Hospital but sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

“The other three who were travelling in the vehicle at the time were pronounced dead at the scene. All are thought to have been from the Durham area.”

Superintendent Tracy Bradley said: ““We are conducting an investigation to try to find out what the cause was. We have family liaison officers working with the family and relatives of the deceased.”

Jason Abrams, a golfer at the nearby Laceby Manor Golf Club, told ITV News: “It’s a bendy road but people do go at a great lick along it. All we know is what the police have said - that the car tried to overtake something or the car hit a curb which has sent it spinning out of control and obviously gone head-on into a lorry.”
