Hawking joins fight against homes plan
The Cambridge academic Stephen Hawking is campaigning against plans to build 1,000 houses on unspoilt countryside near his home.
Professor Hawking has signed a petition opposing the construction of the "affordable housing'', which would overlook Grantchester Meadows on the outskirts of Cambridge.
He and his wife, Elaine, have joined a growing number of local environmentalists opposing the development. The petition reads: "Building on this green space would have a seriously damaging effect on an area of outstanding natural beauty, which is enjoyed by all the residents of Cambridge and the surrounding villages."
Anne Kent, a councillor who is opposed to the scheme, was delighted that the Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, who holds 12 honorary degrees and is the author of the bestseller A Brief History of Time, has joined the campaign.
"I think it is marvellous that somebody respected and renowned across the world is supporting an area known throughout the world.
"His support makes a lot of difference both to people joining our campaign and those considering developing the area," she said. The proposal will be considered by Cambridge City Council in June.
