Jo Cox: Fundraising page for charities close to MP's heart hits £1million

A fundraising page for causes dear to Jo Cox has reached £1 million.

The page was set up following the death of the Yorkshire MP to donate money to causes she felt passionately about.

“We are blown away by your incredible support,” said a message on the page, posted after donation reached £700,000.

The Royal Voluntary Service, Hope Not Hate and The White Helmets will all receive a share of the money.

Another message of thanks said: “We are deeply humbled by the incredible wave of support this page has received.

“Thank you so much to everyone who has donated, shared and mentioned this fund to friends, it is truly astounding to feel this level of solidarity and love for Jo and the values she stood for.

“Please keep spreading the word far and wide. Together we are helping three causes that held a special place in Jo’s heart. That is a wonderful legacy, and one you are all part of.”

In other comments, people revealed how Ms Cox had inspired them to vote in the upcoming referendum.

“I had decided not to vote in the upcoming referendum,” wrote Hazel Sayer, “but I have changed my mind thanks to reading about the passion of this fine young woman, who worked tirelessly for a more tolerant society and for people who need it most, and for the future of her children - the same age as mine.

“I'll vote remain because you are not here to do so, Jo, but also because of your efforts to bring people together in kindness, not hate.

“I hope to contribute to a more tolerant, peaceful society for my children, and yours. And it seems, that is the effect you had on people. An inspiration, and wonderful example of kindness and compassion. My deepest condolences.”

Carmel Owens wrote: “I wasn't totally sure what way to vote or even If I was with this terrible evil that has taken the life of a beautiful vibrant life my mind is now made up as to how to vote.”
