Johnny Depp arrives at High Court as libel trial enters its third week

Amber Heard has claimed Johnny Depp threw bottles “like grenades” during a blazing row which she previously described as a “three-day hostage situation”.

The claims relate to an incident in March 2015 when the pair stayed at a property on Australia’s Gold Coast, while Depp was filming Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

On her third day of giving evidence at the High Court in London, 34-year-old Heard said she was “too scared to look behind” as Depp threw “all the bottles in reach”. She said he threw around 30 bottles in total.

Heard has accused Depp of repeatedly assaulting her during the trip while high on drugs and drink.

And she has previously claimed that Depp “explicitly threatened” to kill her on several occasions during their tumultuous relationship.

Depp, 57, is suing The Sun’s executive editor Dan Wooton, and the newspaper’s publisher over a 2018 article that described the actor as a “wife beater”.

Depp denies 14 allegations of violence against Heard and claims he was the victim of violence in the relationship.

During Wednesday’s proceedings, Eleanor Laws QC – representing Depp – put it to Heard that during the alleged Australia incident she worked herself “into a rage, screaming at him” and threw a glass bottle.

Heard said she got angry “at times” but “not to the extent where I would throw anything at him offensively”.

In response to a suggestion from Laws that she threw a bottle at Mr Depp’s head, smashing a mirror behind him, Ms Heard said she did break a bottle “very early” on the second evening of the trip, and it was “before Johnny had started to throw the bottles at me”.

She claimed the couple were in an argument about Depp’s drinking and when she confronted him, he offered her the bottle.

Heard told the court: “He said, ‘Oh yeah, you want it? Here, take it’, and at that point drinking had already been... he had already given it up for a while and it was on the list of ‘if this happens, I leave’ sort of thing. It was no-fly.

“And he gestured to offer it to me and I reached to take it and he pulled it back.”

Heard went on to say she “reached for it a second time and I smashed it on the floor in between Johnny and I”.

She added: “I regret I did that.”

Heard then told the court: “He started picking them (bottles) up one by one and throwing them like grenades.

“One after the other after the other, in my direction, and I felt glass breaking behind me, I retreated more into the bar and he didn’t stop.”

On Tuesday, the court heard that billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk offered to provide Heard with “24/7 security” after she said she would apply for a restraining order against her former husband.

Laws read out text messages between Heard and Musk dating back to May 2016. According to the texts, Heard tells Musk that she is going to obtain a restraining order against her then-husband.

Ms Heard has denied having an affair with the businessman while married to Mr Depp.

Depp and Heard met on the set of The Rum Diary in 2009 and married in 2015. Heard filed for divorce just one year later.

The trial continues.
