Liverpool school crash: Eight schoolgirls injured after being hit by car

Police, paramedics and firefighters called to the scene but none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening

Six girls aged from 11 to 13 have suffered serious injuries after they were hit by an out-of-control car near a school.

The children were taken to hospital after the crash outside Belvedere Academy in Liverpool at 3.20pm on Friday. Witnesses said the car mounted the pavement.

Police, paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene but none of the injuries were believed to be life-threatening. The driver of a yellow Peugeot, a woman in her 80s, was treated by paramedics.

Peter Kennedy, principal of Belvedere Academy, said: “Six of our students sustained injuries, some quite serious, but not life-threatening. The emergency services were on the scene quickly and dealt efficiently with the situation.”

The North West Ambulance Service said a total of eight people were treated at the scene. Six of those injured in the crash were taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital. A 17-year-old was also taken to hospital.

A spokesman for Merseyside Police said: “The collision was reported to the police by a passer-by who witnessed a collision involving a yellow Peugeot and a number of pedestrians.

“A number of them have injuries which are described as serious. Others have minor injuries. Their parents have been informed.”

“All of the injured students have been taken to hospital where they are being treated. We will keep you updated as and when we receive further information.”

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters helped give first aid to five of the girls, at the scene before they were taken to hospital.

Fire engines from Liverpool Community Fire Station and Toxteth Community Fire Station attended, as did members of the search and rescue team.

Station manager Alan Fletcher said: “’Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service attended this serious incident this afternoon and assisted five young casualties at the scene.

“Crews worked closely with North West Ambulance Service, Merseyside police, staff from the school nearby and passers-by to provide first aid and support until the girls were transferred to Alder Hey for further treatment.”
