Man charged with murder of street cleaner

A 30-year-old man will appear in court today charged with the murder of a Polish street cleaner.

Piotr Mikiewicz, 40, was attacked on Wednesday afternoon in Shepherd's Bush, west London, and was taken to hospital by air ambulance but died the next day.

Police said Roger Buckingham will appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court today. He has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon, theft of a motor vehicle and burglary.

Tributes have poured in for Mr Mikiewicz, who was described as "hard-working" and "a friend to everyone with a colourful and friendly personality" by his employer, private contractor Serco. PA
