A man has been killed following a “hazardous chemical incident” at a house on the Isle of Wight.

Ambulance, fire crews and police were called to a house in St Mary’s Road in Cowes just before 7pm Wednesday.

A man in his 20s was treated by paramedics but later died at the scene.

The family living at the house and two ambulance crew members were treated at St Mary’s hospital in Newport but later discharged.

Emergency services dealing with the chemical incident sealed off the road and warned the public to avoid the area.

Police have said the death is not being treated as suspicious.

Inspector Robert Abel said: “Paramedics treated a man in his 20s at a house in St Mary’s Road but he died at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.”

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust said: “One individual was initially treated at the scene. The family living at the property were conveyed to St Mary’s Hospital, Newport, for checks and are being discharged.

“The two ambulance service crew who attended the scene initially were also conveyed to hospital.”
